Whistler Heli Skiing

When the runs are not enough, step it upwith Heli Skiing or Riding! One of the true Whistler experiences that will leave you with the best powder memories of your life.

Endless Freshtracks

Heli skiing is the experience of a lifetime. If you dream of endless untracked powder and no lift lines, this is for you.

Step into the helicopter with a group of your level and enjoy anepic day. Whistler Heli Skiing covers an area around Whistler of about 50 by 30 miles (80km/50km) and brings fewer than 50 skiers a day to the area. Needless to say, fresh tracks are thenorm.

Whistler Heli-Skiing: Big Mountains, No Lift Lines

Whistler heli-skiing is about trading chairlifts and tracked-out snow for untouched alpine bowls, glaciers, and tree runs accessed by helicopter. With access to hundreds of thousands of acres of Coast Mountain backcountry around Whistler, you can ski or ride terrain that feels a world away, yet starts right from the village. Operators typically include guiding, avalanche safety gear, lunch, and transport from Whistler, so you can focus on one thing: deep turns in real wilderness.

What a Typical Heli Day Looks Like

Your day usually starts early in Whistler Village with check-in, waivers, and a detailed safety briefing covering helicopter procedures and avalanche equipment. From there, you’ll shuttle to the heli base, load up, and fly into high alpine terrain where guides choose runs based on weather, stability, and group ability. Expect several long laps—often 3–6 runs or more—on big open glaciers, mellow powder fields, and gladed trees, with a mountain lunch in between. At the end of the day, you fly back out and return to the village in time for après.

Who It’s For (Ability & Fitness)

You don’t need to be an extreme skier to enjoy heli-skiing in Whistler, but you do need to be comfortable on ungroomed blue and black runs at Whistler Blackcomb and able to handle variable snow. If you can link confident turns in powder, navigate bowls and glades, and ski or ride all day with minimal breaks, you’re usually ready for an introductory or “classic” package. Stronger skiers and riders who move quickly and like steeper pitches can opt for “elite” or advanced packages with more runs and more aggressive terrain.

When to Go

Whistler’s heli-ski season typically runs from December into April, with the heart of the season in mid-winter when the snowpack is deepest and the alpine terrain is well filled in. Early season can deliver great storms and lower-angle tree skiing, while February and March often balance reliable powder with enough high-pressure windows for flyable bluebird days. Operators adjust daily plans to match weather and avalanche conditions, so your guides will always be hunting for the best snow on the day.

Whistler Ski Lessons

Learn to Ski in Whistler: From First Turns to Big-Mountain Confidence

Whistler Blackcomb is one of the best places in the world to learn to ski or dial in your technique. With huge variety in terrain, modern lifts, and professional instructors from all over the globe, you can progress quickly while exploring some of the most beautiful mountains in North America.

Why Take a Lesson in Whistler?

Ski lessons are about more than just learning to stop and turn. In Whistler, instructors help you build confidence, improve your technique, and navigate the mountain safely, all while showing you terrain that matches your level. You also pick up local tips about the best lifts, quiet runs, and where to go when the weather changes, which makes the rest of your trip smoother and more fun.

Lesson Options for Every Level

Whether it’s your first day on snow or you’re comfortable on black runs, there’s a lesson format to match your goals.

  • Group lessons: Ideal for beginners and intermediates who want structured coaching in a social, supportive environment. You’re matched with others of similar ability so everyone progresses together.
  • Private lessons: Best if you want one-on-one attention, faster progress, or a customized day for your family or small group. The instructor can focus on your specific challenges and preferred terrain.
  • Kids and youth programs: Designed to keep children safe, engaged, and having fun while they learn. Dedicated kids’ areas, games, and age-appropriate teaching help them gain skills without feeling pressured.
  • Camps and specialty clinics: Multi-day programs for skiers who want to push into steeps, bumps, off-piste, or even introductory backcountry, with the same coach and group over several days.

What to Expect on Lesson Day

Most lessons start with a quick check-in, gear review, and a warm-up on easy terrain. Your instructor will assess your level, then build skills step by step—balancing drills with plenty of actual skiing so it never feels like school. Expect clear demonstrations, personalized feedback, and lots of repetition on terrain that feels challenging but not intimidating, with breaks to rest, warm up, and ask questions.

Tips to Get the Most from Your Lesson

A little preparation goes a long way to making your day more enjoyable and productive.

  • Book early: Peak periods in Whistler sell out quickly, especially for popular dates and private lessons.
  • Choose the right level: Be honest about your experience so you end up in a group that matches your ability.
  • Arrive early: Give yourself time to pick up rentals, find the meeting point, and get comfortable with your gear.
  • Dress smart: Wear waterproof outer layers, warm base layers, good gloves, goggles, and a helmet.
  • Stay open-minded: Try your instructor’s suggestions, even if they feel a bit different at first—small changes in stance or movement can unlock big improvements.

Why Whistler Is Perfect for Progress

Whistler’s huge variety of terrain means you can always find the right slope for your stage of learning, from wide green runs to long, rolling blues and more challenging steeps higher up. As you improve, you don’t need to change resorts—each day you can simply step up to slightly more advanced terrain with guidance from your instructor. That combination of world-class teaching, big-mountain options, and vibrant village life makes Whistler an ideal place to fall in love with skiing.

Whistler Snowmobiling

Snowmobiling In Whistler

Is one of the most thrilling ways to experience the Coast Mountains in winter, combining adrenaline, stunning scenery, and that unmistakable feeling of freedom you get when you’re cruising over fresh powder. Whether you are staying in a luxury slopeside chalet or a cozy village townhouse, adding a snowmobile tour to your Whistler itinerary is an easy way to turn a great trip into a truly unforgettable mountain adventure. With guided options for first-timers, families, and seasoned riders alike, it is an accessible activity that still feels like a bucket-list experience rather than just another day on the snow.

One of the biggest appeals of snowmobiling in Whistler is the sheer variety of terrain you can explore in a relatively short amount of time. Within a single tour, you might wind your way through peaceful, snow-laden forests, cross wide-open meadows with panoramic views, and climb toward high alpine plateaus where the mountains seem to stretch endlessly in every direction. Many tours are designed to showcase these contrasts, starting on gentle, groomed trails that help you get comfortable before opening up into spacious areas where you can enjoy a bit more speed and freedom. That mix of control and wildness is part of what makes snowmobiling such a memorable complement to skiing or riding at Whistler Blackcomb.

Guided Tours

Guided tours are carefully structured so that even guests with no previous snowmobiling experience can participate with confidence. Before you ever hit the trail, your guide will walk you through the basics of machine operation, braking, cornering, and safe following distances, as well as how to navigate the terrain you will encounter. You will be outfitted with a helmet, and in many cases, warm outerwear and boots if you do not have your own, so you do not need to arrive with specialized gear. For guests who feel a little nervous at first, most operators offer the option to ride as a passenger, allowing them to enjoy the scenery and excitement without the pressure of driving. As the tour progresses, confidence tends to build quickly, and what starts as a new skill often becomes the highlight of the trip.

Surprisingly Flexible

Snowmobiling is also a surprisingly flexible activity that works well for different types of groups and travel styles. Families with children often choose slower-paced, family-friendly tours that follow wide, groomed trails and prioritize the experience of being in nature over speed. These outings frequently include fun stops for photos, snow play, and hot chocolate, giving kids time to burn off energy in a safe setting while parents enjoy the views. Some providers even offer designated learning areas or mini-sled experiences, allowing younger riders to try a scaled-down version of snowmobiling under close supervision. On the other end of the spectrum, adults or older teens seeking more of a thrill can opt for performance-oriented tours that venture farther into the backcountry and feature steeper climbs, more technical terrain, and opportunities to practice advanced riding techniques under the watchful eye of an experienced guide.

The timing of your tour can dramatically change the feel of the experience as well. Daytime snowmobile tours are ideal if you want to soak in the full mountain panorama, with views of surrounding peaks, frozen lakes, and dense forests shimmering under bright winter light. These outings are perfect for photography, and they pair nicely with a morning on the ski hill or an easy afternoon in the village afterward. Evening and twilight tours, however, add another layer of magic. As the sun sets and the sky deepens into twilight, the landscape takes on a quieter, more atmospheric feel, especially when your headlights slice through softly falling snow. Many evening tours include a stop at a rustic backcountry cabin or yurt, where you can warm up by the fire, enjoy a hot drink, and share stories with your group before heading back down the trail under a canopy of stars.

From a practical perspective, snowmobiling is a smart choice for mixed-ability groups where not everyone skis or snowboards. It allows non-skiers to enjoy a “big mountain” experience without needing lift tickets or advanced technical skills, while still feeling fully immersed in Whistler’s winter environment. It also fits well into travel schedules because tours typically run in half-day or evening blocks, making it easy to combine with other winter activities such as skiing, snowshoeing, tubing, or simply relaxing in your accommodation’s hot tub. For guests in Whistler primarily for a ski holiday, snowmobiling offers a fun way to give their legs a break from the slopes while staying active and outdoors.

Planning Ahead

Is the key to getting the most out of a Whistler snowmobiling experience. Because tours are popular during peak winter and holiday periods, it is wise to reserve your preferred date and time well in advance, especially if you have your heart set on a particular type of tour, such as a family-focused outing, a performance ride, or a night tour with a cabin dinner. When you book, you will be able to choose between single-rider and double-rider machines, decide on the difficulty level that matches your comfort, and confirm exactly what gear is provided and what you need to bring. Dressing in warm, moisture-wicking layers, wearing good winter socks, and bringing a neck warmer and gloves will go a long way toward keeping you comfortable throughout the tour.

Ultimately, snowmobiling in Whistler is about more than machines and speed; it is about accessing parts of the winter landscape you could not easily reach any other way, and doing it in a way that feels both exhilarating and surprisingly approachable. The combination of professional guidance, well-maintained equipment, and breathtaking scenery makes it an ideal “signature” experience to include in your trip. Whether you are travelling as a couple, a family, or a group of friends, carving fresh tracks through the snow, pausing to take in mountain vistas, and warming up with a hot drink in the backcountry will leave you with the kind of vivid memories that define a Whistler winter getaway.
